How Does Microneedling Work?
Microneedling is a minimally invasive treatment that boosts your body’s natural production of collagen and leverages your skin’s healing process. We commonly use it for its anti-aging and scar-reduction capabilities. This treatment helps resurface your skin for a firmer and smoother texture, and an even tone.
You are usually a good candidate for microneedling if you are in good health and previous dermatologic treatments haven’t been effective in treating your skin issues.
We may recommend alternatives to microneedling in the case of:
- Pregnancy
- A history of skin scars
- Certain skin conditions like psoriasis
- Open wounds or current infection in the treatment area
- Recent radiation therapy
At the beginning of your appointment, we will apply a topical anesthetic to minimize your discomfort. We usually do this about an hour before beginning the procedure. During microneedling treatment, our provider makes tiny pricks under your skin with a precise tool. They will gently move the instrument across the skin of the targeted area for about 30 minutes.
Microneedling Recovery and Results
Since microneedling is a nonsurgical treatment, it requires minimal downtime. You can resume your normal activities right after your appointment. Your skin will be more sensitive to sun exposure, so make sure to wear a broad-spectrum sunscreen with an SPF 30 or above for a few weeks.
You may experience the following minor side effects:
- Redness
- Irritation
- Bleeding
- Bruising
- Peeling
These side effects usually go away within a few hours or days. All these reactions are part of your body’s natural response to the procedure as it is creating new skin cells for a rejuvenated appearance.
You generally start seeing results within two weeks and may need four or more treatments for optimal results. Once you complete your initial series of procedures, we will determine how often you should get maintenance microneedling appointments to enjoy your glow in the long term.
